Brief History:
The Lordship and Barony of Braemar is a title of nobility in the Baronage of Scotland created by Crown Charter on the 24th of March 1530 by King James V. Originally bestowed on George Gordon, Earl of Huntly. By 1639, the title was held by Jean, Countess of Mar as recorded in the 1639 Royal Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland. The Lordship and Barony of Braemar was then held by the Dukes of Fife until 1982 when it was assigned by disposition to Captain Alexander Arthur Alfonso David Maule Ramsay of Mar, descendant of Queen Victoria and only child of Princess Patricia of Connaught. In 2004 John Sullivan, Earl of Breadalbane, acquired the title and the caput of the barony from the Right Hon. Merlin Sereld Victor Gilbert Hay of Errol, Earl of Erroll, and the other trustees of the estate of Captain Alexander Ramsay of Mar. On the 14th of November 2025 Ambassador Otto Federico von Feigenblatt succeeded by disposition to the title of Lord and Baron of Braemar and was infeft in All and Whole the lands of the Barony of Braemar including its caput, Braemar Court. The BBC describes the Barony of Braemar as “one of the most prestigious titles in Scotland”.
Legal Status and Privileges: The Lordship and Barony of Braemar is a heritable title of honor recognized by the Scottish Parliament, Court of the Lord Lyon, and the Scottish Law Commission. As part of the nobility of Great Britain, the Baron of Braemar has an official place in the table of precedence, is entitled to the honorific prefix The Much Honoured, has the right to petition the Lord Lyon for arms with a steel helm with a gold-garnished grille of three bars, has the right to hold a ceremonial baronial court and appoint court officers, and is entitled to wear the baronial robe and cap of maintenance.
Seat: Braemar Court is the historic caput of the Barony of Braemar. The estate is located at the heart of the Royal Deeside in Scotland. Consisting of over two hectares of land on the outskirts of the village of Braemar, the estate has panoramic views to the surrounding countryside. Braemar Court is located only nine miles from Balmoral Castle, a residence of the Royal Family. The estate is property of the current Baron of Braemar, the Much Honoured Otto Federico von Feigenblatt of Braemar.
Remainder: The original crown charters of the Lordship and Barony of Braemar make the title inheritable by “heirs and appointees” and if the holder dies interstate, the title is inherited according to the Succession (Scotland) Act of 1964. The current Baron has pledged to keep both the title of nobility and Braemar Court (the Seat) in his bloodline. Otto Constantino von Feigenblatt of Braemar, Younger of Braemar, is the heir apparent to the Lordship and Barony of Braemar, Braemar Court, and to the Headship of the House of Feigenblatt. Thus, the Barony of Braemar is the senior title of the Head of the House of Feigenblatt, a traditional hereditary noble household.
